Welcome to the Oman Islamic Economic Forum (OIEF)

The two day conference will consist of a series of group discussions and plenary sessions. Following His Majesty Sultan Qaboos’s approval for banks to offer Islamic finance in the Sultanate, there is widespread optimism that Islamic finance can add significantly to the growth of the economy. This conference therefore comes at an opportune time.

Critical issues to be explored will include:

• The right Islamic banking model for Oman.
• Strengths and weaknesses of standalone Islamic banks as compared to Islamic windows of conventional banks.
• The role of Zakat, Waqf and microfinance in Islamic finance and developing corporate social responsibility.
• Islamic banking as a tool for economic reform.
• The regulatory challenges of bringing in Islamic finance.
• Current Shari’a issues.

With the current response from the Islamic finance community, the OIEF is poised be one of the prominent Islamic banking forums in the region.
